HI

Does anybody know of a place where I can buy a PC case that is like a regular tower but the buttons and drives face out of the side something like my crude picture below.

I could make one but I'd rather not have to go o the effort

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cant say I've come across cd drives on the side...buttons perhaps on the side or top and hd's that can be mounted from the side but not cd drives. Had a search and couldn't find anything either.

CD/DVD drives are not square, so I doubt you'll find a case with the drawer coming out 'sideways'. There are a few odd shapes available, not least small cases with external drives if you must.

Why that shape?

I am intrigued. Do you require constant access to the guts?

No I have a lack of space and I would like my PC to go across the back of my desk rather than front to back. My current rig is on the floor and I hate it being there.

Bitfenix Phenom. No external bays for optical drives, but the USB, audio and power button is around the side.

Bitfenix Prodigy is similar, but has an optical bay on the front with ports on the side.

I'm sure there's another similar HTPC case, can't think what it is though.

I can see where you're going with this but that's a crazy form factor as the CD drives would be deeper than the depth (widths) of a standard AT case. Assuming you have a standard AT factor tower can you not just turn is sideways and have the power button and the CD drive on the side?

How often do you use the CD drive anyway, (or the power button come to think of it)

This is a wind up isn't it ?

It would need to be a lot "deeper" (wider) than a conventional case to accommodate the extra depth of the drive and the space needed for cables.

However, such a creature does exist/has existed :

Could you not just turn your current PC 90 degrees to the side and never use the DVD drive? When was the last time you actually used the DVD drive..really?

Ours is sideways, up above the monitor, on a shelf, due to space restrictions. The DVD tray comes out the end, into open space, so no drama accessing that.

No you cheeky bugger. People spend lots of money on cases and modding cases.

Why is it a wind up that I would like a case to suit my needs and wants.

If it was a case of (pardon the pun) paying £30 to get said case then great but if I have to mod my own or it's gonna cost £150 then I'll just put mine sideways.

Just asking pal.

I put my PC case behind my monitor, so I went for a case (Coolermaster) with the buttons and USB ports on-top, the DVD drive is still in the standard place though. This might be an option for you.

Can I approach your problem from a different direction.
  1. What is the spec of your current PC?
  2. Is it too large in general?
  3. Apart from an optical drive how many hard drives does it have?
  4. Are graphics handled by being built into the system, one graphics card or multiple?
I have been intending to replace my old PC with something smaller for quite some time now. As my greatest skill is procrastination I'm still looking.

I thought of a case similar to this but can't find one.

My current thought is the Intel NUC D54250WYKH with a 120GB mSATA SSD and a 1TB 2.5" HD. An external USB3 DVD writer would be a cheap extra. Any extra storage could be handled by a NAS drive.

Have you thought about a Wyse Terminal? Tiny little things that can easily sit behind the monitor.

If desktop space is a problem, leave your current tower on the floor out of the way. Then just get a stand alone DVD and connect it via USB. It will take up less space than a paperback book on your desk. A small 4 hub USB port as well takes up next to no space for any other peripherals you want to use.
