Remote Assistance using Messenger on XP

So, I've got 2 computers, one using Home Edition and one using Professional.
I want to use Remote Assistance via Messenger to access the Pro machine but can't get a connection. I've disabled windows firewall on both machines.
I think it might be SP2 issue, the home edition computer has it, the pro machine not. Been on to Windows Update to install but it doesn't appear to be required as a download. Having checked the system properties, there is no mention of SP2 being installed, i'm pretty sure it's not. So how do I get SP2 installed without ordering a CD from WU.
The 2 computers in question are connected via the internet. I can access LAN computers no problem, after checking all machines over the LAN have SP2.

Being very wary about wading into waters I have no expertise in - when I downloaded SP2 it was simply through microshaft.com's security section, quite apart from windows update.

You turn it on on the Pro machine via the control panel.
You then download the client from microsoft.
Then you can run the client on the home machine connecting it to the pro machine and you get the pro desktop on the home box...

Tried allsorts of things, finally tried to establish a VPN but cannot create a VPN as routing and RAS services are unable to start.
The XP Pro computer I am trying to connect to is part of a workgroup that uses a shared server/comms room, in a building habited by a number of different companies. All the companies share the same internet connection. I can only surmise that it is the settings of the shared server that will not allow access from an outside computer?
