when i exit from windows into dos, as via the dos-prompt or as a restart, or when by bypass windows at bootup to go instead into dos than windows - my cd drives are never availbe till i go back to windows - so how can i access them when in dos only?

I presume from your previous posts that you are using Windows 98, in which case boot from the Windows 98 startup floppy or the Windows 98 CD-ROM and select the option to start the computer with CD-ROM support. You will then end up at a DOS prompt and the CD will work.

If you truly want CD rom access in dos without windows you need to load the real mode drivers for it.

You need the microsoft cd rom redirector (mscdex.exe) loaded in the autoexec.bat and a device driver loaded in the config.sys(both of which are antiques).
