Designing a website for a new business venture I`m involved with and just wondered how you get your site recognised and searched for? If that`s the right way of putting it!

you have to register you site

www.google.com/addurl.html

also make sure you have all the meta tags and headings set up in your web site

Spivvy is quite correct in what he says but there is a lot more to it than that. For example sites using frames or Flash are not search engine friendly.

One of the best ways of getting your site into Google is by getting people who are already in Google to link to it but stay clear of link farms

Get listed on DMOZ, start building back links, if you can try and avoid link swapping. So try and get links that link to your site but you don't link back.

As many related links and high ranking sites as possible. You'll do better if your site is related to say green bottles and the site at no.1 on google for green bottles links to you.

Plenty of good content.

No more than 5% keyword content, 50% header 1 content, and no more than 2.1% h2 content.

P.S. you can get listed on Google without submitting your URL to them with just the links.

Give it about 2-3 months before you start seeing results.

Hi Schuey! Can you elaborate on this? Are you saying that no more than 5% of your page content should be keywords? And that no more than 50% of your H1 content should be keywords?

And by keywords do you mean the words in your keywords meta tag, or the actualy search terms you expect visitors to use?

I'm always interested in sharpening my search engine knowledge and comparing others experiences with mine!

Hi
By keywords I mean the search term you're wanting your site to appear for in Google. Not in your meta tags but in your content, the text the user can see.
So if you had say 10,000 words of content no more than 5% of that should be keywords. Anything more is usually considered spamming (black hat techniques) by Google and can somtimes lead to banning. You can get away with more on Yahoo by the way.

For example one of my sites is 13th in Yahoo for a specific search term, and it's content rich with the right percentage of keywords, but in Google it's currently 46th. My ranking improves in relation to me gaining more back links as far as I can tell.

In your <h1> tags you can get away with 50% of your text being the keyword. In your <h2> no more than 2.1%, so more text and only one reference to your keyword in the <h2> tag.

Not one thing is going to make a big impact but everything done together will.

Like I said though - with Google it's all about the links more than content but every little helps.

I did some research into the top 10 rankings for my keyword in Google. Every single site had different stats, for example one had a low amount of links (200) but was linked to DMOZ and Yahoo Directory and had a keyword density of 3.5% and was ranked 2nd, but another had 3000 links but was not linked to DMOZ or Yahoo and had a keyword density of 0.9% and came up 5th.

As for finding what keywords to get the most traffic you should use Overture(not sure off the top of my head)? because it'll give you the total monthly requests for that search term.

Also keep checking Google.co.uk rather than .com because Google.co.uk returns less results so you'll show up quicker.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that - interesting to read some informed stuff rather than just conjecture, which is what you mostly get with regard to search engine optimisation...
