Right, this is driving me mad. Picture the scene.
1 desktop PC running Win98Se wired to router/modem
1 Laptop1 running XP connecting wirelessly
1 Laptop2 running XP Pro connecting wirelessly.

For various reasons the router is set to have no encryption, Laptop1 has no encryption and can share the folders and printers I have allocated on the desktop.
Laptop2 is encrypted and clearly cannot access said folders/printers.

I've been through both laptops help files trying to figure out how to switch on/off encrytption but the help files blatantly lie and refer to tabs not evident in the relevant boxes.

Questions:
1. How the hell do I turn off/on encryption.
2. If I elect to use encryption (which really I should)
a) How do I know what encryption Laptop2 is using
b) How do I know which type of encryption to use (router has 4 options).

TIA. This is sending me mildly

Couple of questions first.

What type of wireless card is it in Laptop 2? Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, something else or is it built in to the laptop.

Second, are you using Windows to control the wireless networking on laptop2 or an application provided by the wireless card manufacturer?

I've been setting up a wireless network, and used WPA-PSK encryption. This requires you to set each computer with the same keycode, but XP wireless network wizard should take you through all that without too much trouble. have you installed Service Pack 2, which enables the wizard?

Once you've got everything on the same channel, keycode and network access code, as well as the correct SSID, it should all work....

Oh and are you running Service pack 2 on the XP boxes, because this does have an impact on the configuration of the wireless network with some makes of wireless card.

It's an IBM T30, built in Wireless. Info says it's a Cisco Systems PCI Wireless Adapter.

Good question, excellent. I think it's software running it, but I also have 'Use windows to configure....' box ticked, although it does seem to randomly untick itself.

Certainly running SP2 on Laptop1 (3Com PCMCIA wireless card)
Laptop2 is more tricky as the company 'look after' our updates. I did install SP2 but I have been told they block it - how can I tell?

Tried to use the network wizard but it ends up asking to make a config floppy for use in other machines or something - my machine doesn't have a floppy drive.

Just select the box for 'I don't need to configure any other machines' and click finish.

The setup wizard asks me to use a flash disc to transfer the setup information from computer to computer - I guess you're being asked to do the same using a floppy - but you also have the option of setting it up manually - which, though laborious, does work.

I'm getting an error message with the wizard which suggests a software conflict - something about reading Microsoft knowledge base articles - maybe you have a similar software conflict?

Incidentally, I find the little box that gets Windows to configure the setings, seems to randomly uncheck itself too - software, huh?!

Right, been having a fiddle and going with the netwrok wizard isn't working. It installs a network bridge which knocks out my VPN in to the office network.
If I could only disable the encryption on this machine and get it connected I can take it from there - any ideas?
