anyone know anything about raid 5? our server is dead and we had a so called engineer in yetserday and all he has done so far is break the raid 5 config by the looks of it - does this mean the data is lost on the drives or can u reconfigure the raid and get it back?

If you are lucky, the RAID config is stored in two places; the controller and the disks.

You might be able to get it back from either. Most config apps give you the option to restore the config from either the disks or the controller.

1st, before anything else, check your backups.

Then get someone competent in to sort out the raid problem.

What sort of problems are you getting?

What sort of RAID setup is it? If hardware, you should be able to access the RAID setup menu just after the computer boots .. go into that menu and see what it says - just don't fiddle with anything you're not sure about

Precisely!

Is the raid software or hardware based?

a) Did the Raid controller die?
b) Was it a disk?
c) Was it more than one disk?

Or was it nothing to do with the raid but the engineer bust it anyway?

we had an error message about multiple dead disks but the main prob was w2k blue screening every time after we had a power cut at the weekend. had a hardware engineer out to check the disks etc and after i had told him not to touch the raid 5 he managed to do something to it so we lost the logical drive. luckily after a call to megaraid who where extremely helpful we got the raid back with all the data ( no thanks to the engineer who had gone home)

however server is still buggered trying to restore system state using veritas but its just not having it. hence why still at work

IIRC, you'll have to go into the W2K recovery console and perform a restore from there post restore.... Well, you will if it's like Tapeware.
