I've recently installed my new NEC 3500 DVD writer and it does every I want to to except write DVDs. I guess this means I need a DVD burner program so I'm currently downloading a trial version of Nero 6 Reloaded.

Is this the best available or is there any other software I should look at (even freeware).

Adobe do a good DVD burner program for writing DVD movie compatible disks:

www.adobe.com/products/encore/main.html

...it is pricey, but the best I've found.

PS: Any CD-ROM burning software can handle DVD data disks provided that you enable data writing to your DVD. You can even use XP's built in burning for data files if you do that...

Crikey $549 I only want to take a back up of my home pc once in a blue moon!!!

I've tried looking at the properties of the drive and can't see how to enable data writing to it (for DVDs).

I presume you've got some form of burning software installed?
if not try installing aspi drivers get them Here
There is a tool to check if you have them installed. Worked for me when I had problems after installing a new dvd burner.
