....get a print of what I'm seeing on my monitor? I'm sure there's an easy way, I just don't know it.

For the whole monitor area press the PrtSc (print Screen button) this will copy image to clipboard. then load up Paintshop or similiar and paste into this

If you just want the open window then Hold down Alt at the same time as Print screen

To copy the window or screen contents

To make a copy of the active window, press ALT+PRINT SCREEN.
To copy the entire screen as it appears on your monitor, press PRINT SCREEN.
Note

To paste the image into a document, click the Edit menu in the document window, and then click Paste.

When I do that the "paste" is greyed out so cant be selected.

Alternatively use Google to search for a free screen grab utility. "Free screen grab utility" should be a useful search phrase to start with ;-)

Try the shortcut Ctrl+V instead.

Shift-printscreen.

Then in Photoshop, new image (it'll set the size automatically to the screen size).

Then Paste.

Bingo!

Thats no fair, you never said you had Photoshop
