Im at my folks place for a week and one of the many challenges lined up for me is to fix their broadband, which theyve never managed to get working.

Its a speedtouch 330 usb modem. The first one they got from wanadoo blew up one they plugged it into the usb port (smoke and burning smell). So they sent it back and got a replacement. The port still works fine with other devices so I dont think its that.

Followed installation instructions. Trouble is, when you plug in the modem it only comes up in device manager as an unknown device. Ive tried using update driver on this pointing it to first the original drivers supplied by wanadoo, then to the latest drivers downloaded from the speedtouch site. In all cases it states that the location specified does not contain any info about your hardware yadda yadda.

Suggestions?

Get a modem with an ethernet port

Sorry, couldn't resist. On a more serious note, what is the operating system?

Chris,

I think I've got the same ADSL modem here at home. Small sort of elliptical grey thing?

I got a setup CD from my ISP that asked you to plug the modem in, then run the setup program. This installed all the appropriate device drivers etc (XP Pro) and its been good as gold.

Dunno if you got the CD as well? It came in a little SpeedTouch wallet? Running that, all was fine.

when I got mine, the instructions were very clear to install the software first - then plug in the modem, not the other way round.

x5x3 is quite correct.

With the modem unplugged from the PC, reboot the machine then run the Speedtouch setup program and only plug in when prompted.

Thats what I did.... Followed setup instructions to the letter. Also tried uninstall / reinstall again following the instructions.

Tried a different speedtouch usb modem which didnt work either - didnt even appear in device manager. The next plan is trying a different machine. If that works I will reinstall windows.

I tihnk the problem you have here is to do with the word Speedtouch. Bung it on ebay, do a quick search for recommendations on here and get something decent.

This should be easy to fix.

Start the PC in safe mode then goto device manager. Look at the bottom of the list under USB, you should see somthing like "unknown device". Remove this and restart the PC.

Unstall the modem software and restart the PC again, now reinstall the software and guess what.............. Yep restart the PC. Now plug in the modem, Windows should now see the new modem and install the drivers.

Job done.

Doug.

Sometimes the power supplied by the USB port isn't up to spec. My Speedtouch works fine. My father had problems with his, tried it on a different machine and it worked. Bought a powered USB hub, then no problems on his PC.

A friend had a similar problem with a broadband connection that she hadn't been able to get working. After 10 minutes on the phone to BTBroadband tech support, I had to unplug the modem, uninstall the broadband software using Add/Remove programs control panel, AND run two utilities from the original setup CD which removed various registry entries etc... This basically got me back to a PC that to all intents and purposes nobody had ever tried to install broadband on. Then, after a reboot, I ran setup again, being sure to follow the installation guide precisely, and it worked a treat.

Don't know if this helps, but might be another avenue to investigate.
