Now I've got a mobo that works, my self-built computer is up and running except there's no sound!

System:-

Asus A7n8e-deluxe mobo
Athlon XP Barton core 2600 cpu
1Gb ddr400 pc3200 RAM
Terratec Aureon 5.1 fun sound card with optical I/O
ATI radeon 9600XT graphics
NEC DVD player

Should there be a S/PDIF cable from the mobo to the sound card?

I installed an old Soundblaster 5.1 card last night and that worked for a while, then all sound stopped.

Have I buggered up the software - there is NVidia audio on the mobo, and now I've added (and removed) Creative drivers, and now Terratec drivers. Is this a hardware or software problem?

No cable required from m/b to s/c.
Does the m/b have built-in sound that needs turning off?

Switch off the onboard sound.

Check device manager see whats up - install the cards drivers.

Only connection to the soundcard thats needed is a stereo audo cable to the CD-rom for Music cd playback.
