Software conflict

I have been installing software on a new PC still using XP as the OS. With one piece of software Nikon Capture 4 (used to do initial image enhancement prior to Photoshop)every time I tried to open it the PC crashed.
I then discovered this piece of advice
"I have an amd64 with XP and SP2
Nikon Capture didn't work until I disabled DEP.

This can be done as follows:

Goto start, control panel, system, advanced, click on settings under Startup and Recovery, then click Edit to edit the boot.ini file, modify it so it says: /Execute instead of: /NoExecute=OptIn"

So I did all this and so far everything has functioned perfectly.
The question is having done the adjustment I dont really know how important the change is I have done I presume it somehow interacts with Service Pack 2
So will be grateful for your views

It's not an issue. It's a bit of security that stops certain virus and attacks running bits of code that they shouldn't. If you're running a virus scanner it's not really needed.
