Does Windows 2003 Server maintain a record anywhere of the last user to access / modify a file?

Only if you switch on auditing, I guess?

(additional server overhead if you do though....for file and print you may want to think carefully before doing this)

Also bear in mind if you do choose this, the Security Log will get very large, very quickly. Size it as appropriate.

Er....sorry, haven't touched 2003 in a while. Say you want to allow auditing of a folder, right click select Properties, click Advanced in the dialog box. You'll see an Auditing section in there.
