Anybody got any recommendations, preferably for free download S/W or cheapish S/W?

Use Firefox instead of IE

or

spybot will do what you want for free. Download it, update it, remove stuff. There's the odd stubborn one it won't shift, but for free it's pretty damn good.

Once you are clean, run the immunize option.

If it doesn't shift it, and you're happy digging around inside your system, a copy of hijackthis should remove the stubborn buggers.

Google toolbar or XP Service Pack 2 if you use Windows XP

Or even just use the latest IE. (On XPSP2).

Ditto, and they are all free.

Also use the free Grissoft AVG virus checker, but never get a virus now anyway!
