Building a new PC for work and it's got a serial ATA drive. Is there some magic trick needed to get the damn thing bootable? The Windows installer will not see it at all, even when using the 'Press F6 to load a third party driver' option on startup.

It's definitely one of those days again

make sure you are loading the right drivers, when I was building my new box I kept putting the wrong driver on (I have two SATA controllers onboard).

Make sure you are loading the BIOS for the drive itself in the BIOS - do you see it on the POST message?

Failing that, I'm assuming the drive is connected and getting power ok?

Judas, are you trying to install XP on it..?

You should have to press F6 during setup... at the end of which it will ask you for the SATA driver... should be on disk or CD... load 'em up (check you get the right one - see mobo manual).. and you should be away.

Also check the BIOS to make sure that the SATA controller is turned ON!!

Any problems, give me a bell mate. I'll drop you my mobile number via PH profile just in case Ace-T has it, and you don't!

Looks like we got it sorted….

1) Make sure SATA is enabled on the BIOS…! (and the BIOS is the latest version!)

2) Use another PC with the supplied driver CD… hunt out the driver and find the utility that makes a drivers disk for your controller (should be listed in the manual).

3) Press F6 when Windows boots to setup… then use the above disk you created… hoping you've got the right controller…!

4) Asus manuals are rubbish.

Cheers mate!

Got there eventually. Even RTFM didn't help

Ah, but mates buy their mates pints anyhow, especially to say thanks for helping them

I especially like when they only include the japanese manual. It's so challenging trying to configure a system based on a few pictures and some line art. I just live for moments like that...

Well, even in English they're not much more use. It's all the really helpful stuff listing all the cryptic options in the bios. Yes, I can see all that by going into the bios! I would be helpful if they actually mentioned what the hell they all mean and how to use them!
