A good one this..

the spammers try and get the server to act as a open relay, sending loads of mail to it.

now the server doesnt relay it but it does end up bouncing between the send and defer folders and the problem log.

trouble is this eventually ( once a week) crashes the server...

any ideas on a fix

gw5.5 btw

Not sure. I'm on 6.0 and never had that happen.
Just quite freaky I read that just as I opened my groupwise!

Problem with the 5.5 GWIA is it initially accepts anything, then processes/rejects it. Can you put a third party mail server on the edge of the DMZ to filter/anti-spam it before delivering the valid stuff to Groupwise?

The V6 gwia is much better at handling spam etc, or you could use a third party product from gwava or similar.
