Here's the score.

Since my Grandad popped his cloggs a couple of years ago, my Nan needs to get some interest back in her life.

I've suggested the internet.

She likes the idea and I want to get her onto it, as cheap as possible.

She has a PC and monitor.

What bits of kit will we need in total and whats the cheapest way to do it?

A modem and an account with an ISP?

Is she near you? only, if she isn't, I'd suggest that you get her an account with AOL. Not because it's cheap or particularly good, but because it's easy, and their helpdesk is brilliant. Otherwise you're going to be going round there every weekend removing viruses and malware from her PC.

Cheap (free from friends?) 56k modem and depending on how often she'll be using it then either a pay as you go dial up (1p per minute ?) or a fixed fee anytime or limited hours account maybe £5 - £15 again depending on the isp and the deal.

edited to add - Free virus (AVG?) and firwall (ZoneAlarm)

Excuse my 'thickness'.

So I simply buy a modem, which will just plug into the computer/telephone line?

ISP. Internet Server Provider?

Yup Internet Service Provider

If she already has a pc then just get hold of a modem create an account with one of the many ISPs out there, dial the number they give you (you may want to go through the internet connection wizard if using windows) put in the username and password as provided by the ISP and you're done.

Pick up a free CD from pretty much anywhere (shops, magazines etc) that will even do the install, registration and set up for you automatically.
