Mac user me so I know nothing about this. Parents have a PC. Latest windoze update says it has a firewall and virus checker. The old Norton virus checker has run out, over a year old. Is MS OK or should they be looking elswhere?

Have a trip over to www.grisoft.com and download the latest version of AVG Free AV software.

zonealarm.com seems to be the recommended freebie firewall.

Simon.

The windoze firewall seems to be a waste of space because it only works in one direction and can be disabled programatically.

Excellent free antivirus program called AntiVir Personal Edition (www.free-av.com). It's german so some of the english instructions are slighty out but the works great on XP SP2. Can schedule to download the updates and auto install. In scanning the system at install it found a virus that Norton had missed.

Frankly speaking I got so pissed off with the Norton Internet Security product that I uninstalled it and now use the freebie AntiVir and ZoneAlarm products for virus and firewall.

Cheers, just downloaded that and will pass onto them. Rest are installed and after much hair pulling, norton and Microsoft stuff disabled.
