PH'ers - I'm having a bit of a strange time with Internet explorer. If I click my desktop icon or the icon from the start menu, IE fails to load. If I go to Start>Search> I get an option at the bottom saying "you may also want to"
-Search the internet.
-Change preferences.
In this 'search' window, there is an address bar at the top, like IE. If I type in an address and press enter, the internet then loads as normal!

At the moment im having to access the internet through the start>search route which isnt a major problem. I have checked that the Icons on the desktop and start menu are all pointing to the correct directorys and they are. I have McAfee Virus Scan and AVG, both of them come up clean, I have also run "pc bug doctor" which found a few problems, but camw up with 'all fixed'

I think a virus is behind this.. What do you think would be the next thing to do!

Cheers, and Merry Xmas

Best thing to do is....

.... use FireFox instead.

Even copies all your settings and favourites over from Internet Explorer making it a totally painless migration.

Are there any downsides to firefox?
I use IE with things like adobe acrobat to access online law journals and need it to open new windows and links without problems from multiple web databases.

Nope, its like IE only much faster and more secure.

The only problem is, it occasionally doesn't want to open secure pages but that can be overcome by downloading a extension that makes it pretend to be IE from the FF website.

See SecurityFocus for what they think of IE.

IE is pretty hopless to be honest, do a search on this forum to see how many problems people suffer with it and there is even a thread on this page about it.

Ah, another convert!

I only use IE when a page won't render / work with FireFox now, and in the light of the new information about that add-on, that could be even less now.
