Hi,a friend of mine ordered an ADSL connection(256k)on his BT line and is using tiscali as his ISP.Problem is he has the micro-filter thing coming out of his socket on the wall, then his phone plugs into this, and a cable(rj11 connections)runs from this filter to his Sagem modem,so that's the two things coming out of this filter. He isn't getting the 'ADSL' green light to come on on his modem? The power one is on ok.From what i've heard everyone is saying to disconnect the filter altogether and just run the modem straight from the wall, but the rj11 connections on the modem cable are narrower than the normal BT one at the wall socket,so what does he do?He's had this installed for a couple of weeks and hasn't had an internet connection yet, despite swapping the two filters he got with the modem.

Your friend is using the micro filter correctly and should continue to use it.

Have they got any other devices (telephones / Sky digibox / fax machine) plugged into an extension socket ?

The ADSL micro filter separates the analogue (phone) from the digital (ADSL) signal. Another analogue device plugged into an extension without a filter could cause problems on the digital side.

Failing that, has he checked that BT have actually activated the ADSL ?

I think the problem is that he is using an extension,it is an actual wall socket extension not just the long cable extension you can buy and run under the carpet,he just isn't getting a signal? It is definetly activated as that's been a couple of weeks he's had it.We phoned Tiscali and they said to disconnect any other filters in the house, take the phone off the filter that was sharing the modem connection(didn't make a difference)we just aren't getting anywhere.

Don't disconnect the filter or very time he uses the phone the Internet will disconnect. It sounds like he is not getting a signal from the exchange. There should be an icon on his PC to tell how may bytes have been transmitted and recieved, check that that is building up fairly quickly. Other than that I suspect that the connection hasn't been made by BT or the ISP.
I use an extension for mine and it makes no difference. If he is getting a phone signal on that line then he should get ADSL on it. He can also get BT to boost the signal from the exchange.
I also had a problem with my lines as they were the old copper tyrp and needed to renew them.

Take the modem to the incoming socket, put the filter in and try it with only the modem plugged in (no other devices plugged to any other socket in the house.

If the modem registers a connection, then you're getting somewhere. Most modems have an ADSL light and LAN/PC light, so you shouldn't need to move the PC.

Does the phone work when plugged in through the splitter and extended socket?

Have you tried another splitter?

The phone works fine sharing the splitter as he has it just now,it's just no ADSL light on the modem.I'll tell him to try what you said, thanks.
