Can't get Remote Desktop to work...
Discussion
Following on from my earlier thread about finding the smallest physical PC, it relates to moving the big jobbie into the cupboard under the stairs, and using the new tiny PC to control it using XP's remote desktop functions.
Here's the current setup:
StevesbigPC - my main PC, currently linked by ethernet cable to the wireless router sitting on top of it. For example's sake let's call this IP address x.x.x.2
Router is a Buffalo WMR-G54 wireless router with example IP address of x.x.x.1, connected to the phone socket.
StevesLaptop - old laptop with a wireless card with example ip address of x.x.x.3
Both machines happily surf the internet.
Have setup file sharing on the drives, so I can see files on both machines from either machine.
Here's what the network looks like in explorer:
On both machines under
-My Computer
--System Properties
---Remote
I've enabled Remote Deskop, and try to add users, as per below:
But can't see StevesLaptop, as an available option.
Can you help? Is it anything to do with the wireless setup? Just don't know what configuration problem I'm seeing here.
Thanks
LB

The allow users option to to specify which LOCAL can connect from a Remote Machine
Typically this is JUST the Administrator, but you can specify extra login accounts if you need.
I dont see why you should..
Just try to RDP in,
connect to the box in question (use IP if hostname doesnt work) and you should be away.
If not, it will be a firewalling issue (assuming both boxes are on the same LAN / Router with the same IP and Subnets ... can they ping each other?)
HTH.

Hi Jamie, thanks for writing...
With firewall set to allow all, I can ping the router, and the laptop from my desktop and vice versa.
Have set up an account with Admin rights on the desktop, with a password, and added this in Remote Desktop > Add User....all worked ok.
On the laptop, went to Accessories, Comms, Remote Desktop Connection and used the username and password....got a client could not connect to the remote computer.
BUT>>>>>>>>>>>
Just tried the IP address instead, as you suggested, and it works
Hooray.
However, when I set the firewall to Filter, it doesn't work....so will have a look at the config of that in a moment.....
Big thanks Jamie....one hurdle out of the way, only for another to take its place, but hopefully not for long.

Hooray, done it.
Configured the firewall to allow the laptop's ip address, and it all works, while still filtering all traffic.
Great stuff. Many thanks Jamie, I owe you.
Can even get the Squeezebox working from the laptop....fantastic news.
Now better go to bed.
Top stuff from PH's finest.
