Anyone know where I can find some basic netware info? I have a server running it and I need to find out what files are on it, but I have never used netware so I don't know where to start!
The files I need are on a volume called SYS. When the server starts it says that it is mounting this volume, and then a console comes up. I cannot see any way of accessing the files from this console.
Help!!!

I'm a CNE, post away the info and I'll try and help. Replies may be a little slow with the celebrations etc
In the first instance, what version is it?
On later versions, you can see files from the servers console. To do this, press <CTRL><ESC> and select option 1
Type
load netbasic
It will do some stuff
type
shell
You will be in a crude command interpreter where you can use dir, cd etc to see the files.
When you have done, type
exit
then
unload netbasic
TBH, it's easier to connect to the machine over the network and browse as with any windoze server.
HTH
Oh, and don't just pull the power, when you want to shut it down, type
down
from the console prompt (option 1)

Hi BliarOut,
It is Netware V3.12.
The server is not connected to a network at the moment, it is sitting on my desk about 20 miles away from the network!
The story is that a friend of mine was running his network of 5 computers from this server. He managed to delete the directory containing his work (from one of the workstations), which was on the SYS drive on the server.
When I exit from Netware, it takes me to a DOS prompt, but DIR doesn't show the SYS drive.
Is it possible to recover deleted files from the server?
I tried CTL+ESC and selected option 1, but it just takes me back to a command line.
This is all alien to me, as I have only used Windoze.
Any help much appreciated (in between glasses of the good stuff!)
Cheers,
Richard

You'll need to get a 3.12 server back on the network. You can't browse files from DOS without 3rd party software. Once alive, there is a utility called filer which allows you to recover deleted files. I take it there's no backup of the files in question?
As long as immediate purge of deleted files isn't set to on (default is off!) then the files should come back relatively painlessly. NW has a damn good file system. As long as you aren't short of disk space, they should still be there. Don't add/delete anything until you've run filer. Avoid Vrepair until you've got the files back (you probably don't know what it is anyway. At the moment, that is a good thing!)

NetWare rocks! Shame Novell were so crap at marketing. When you see what NetWare could do compared to Windoze it made you think why did they not manage to get the message across? phenominal network operating system. Then I am biased, another CNE who is wondering why he spent so much time getting his certification.
Nail, head, firmly hit. A far superior NOS with diabolical marketing. 2K3's AD still has a way to go to catch up with NDS from back in the late 90's. Sadly, I sell for the devil these days. It's no good having a better product if noone buys it
Betamax Vs VHS I fear.
Mind you, we still run NW in house despite selling MS to all and sundry. E-mail virus, Groupwise just looks mildly amused and completely ignores it

I'm a soon-to-be CNE hoping I won't be thinking the same (doing the Advanced Management course in a couple of weeks, then Zen to self-study).
From what I can see, there's still plenty of organizations running Novell stuff especially in the public sector. Even in ones moving down the MS route, there's still plenty Novell can offer them - the previous company I worked for got bought out, new owners put in their Win2k+Notes servers but they were so impressed with the iPrint and iFolder services we ran that they got rolled out to the rest of the offices, and now they're considering ZEN. The company we bought our licences from also did a lot of small business support - they had several customers who'd run NW3 or 4, switched to NT4 and now they've been forced to upgrade, have happily gone back to NW and now run 6 or 6.5.
I still see plenty of jobs advertised for up-to-date CNEs - I'm guessing that the proportion of qualified people to jobs is similar (or even more favourable) than in the MS world.
Fingers crossed they've learned from their mistakes and all the current linux effort will improve the situation.

Good luck with the certification, the Linux thing does look like it may be a shot in the arm for Novell, I hope so and I hope they learn from their past mistakes. iprint and ifolder are fantastic, and the stuff I have seen done with Zenworks and PDA's is phenominal.
I used to be a CNE , but haven't touched a Novell server in 5 years......
imho Novell messed up by not using TCP/IP early enough. As a networker IPX sucks, and by the time they went to IP it was too late. It's a pity because NDS is the best !
Also relying on an MS platform was a mistake, if it had run on UNIX they may have appealed to the more serious non windows world a bit more (this is more a marketing issue than a technical one..)
Oh well
