I'm off to Africa in a few weeks, our car is going to be fitted out by www.trakm8.com with a satelite tracking device (you'll be able to follow our every move ). This device will output GPS data via it's serial port that can upped to a PDA with GPS software on it.

Now I have the PDA (an MDAIII) all I need is some GPS software, only the likes of TOM TOM will be next to useless as once through Africa there are next to no roads where we are heading.

What I need is a some basic software like you get on a standard issue GPS device giving waypoints & directions to those waypoints, also Free or nearly free would be great.

Any experiences or help on the subject welcome ??????

You might find a copy of Microsoft Autoroute is pretty good for this.

I used the 2002 edition with my laptop to good effect whilst out with the WRC in all manner of places.

Most 'major' roads were in there but occaisionally you'd find your self driving through big patches of grey.

You can also set map pins which will act as waypoints.

Not sure if you'd be able to run it on a PDA though.

Try Googling for free GPS software - GPS Dash might work for you:

Enjoy your trip and watch out for the lions!

For middle of nowhere stuff, aviation gps is often quite useful. I've got something called flightpsth (i think) on my palm pilot. That gives you a compass and speed and altitude etc and can give you headings to a gps reference.

I've got half a dozen brand new Disney soft toys, each one is about 9 inches high, when squashed together they'll just about fill 3/4 of a carrier bag.

If they're of any use drop me your address and I'll post them as soon as Royal Mail starts working again. If they're not, please don't worry I'm sure some other 'kids' charity will take them.

Dual purpose here? Sounds like they would make a good pillow whilst travelling, though I would avoid the plastic bag unless you cover it with a pillow case.
