new pc build "restart problems"
Discussion
have just built a new pc I have got a problem that when you start up after it has been off overnight it restarts during boot up once maybe twice and sometimes reports a problem with Nortons, I know that this is very bare bones info but can anybody offer any help , im sure there is a clash somehow between nortons and the graphics card driver but have installed latest drivers for all hardware
Any help welcomed

it just restarts, like if you pushed the reset button and then boots ok and works ok with the odd crash and restart every know and then seems to be no real pattern only that the starting thing seems to be when left overnight as when it starts ok can be restarted on and off ok with no problems
Tricky when its a new build - could be a host of things really. I would:
-check all settings in the BIOS are correct, especially where voltages and temperatures are concerned
- uninstall your antivirus if that is under suspicion
- take out all non-essentially hardware from the motherboard
Essentially, you want to achieve the point where it boots up OK - then start testing it by adding back one bit of soft/hardware at a time.
What motherboard are you running?

Get hold of memtest - normally you stick it on a floppy and boot from that floppy - could easily be a dodgy RAM chip - if it is memtest will likely find it.

I used to be General manager of a co. that produced 25,000 pc's p.a.
Problems like yours were down to memory, memory and memory.
Swap out your RAM.
If you built it yourself, find out if the memory is top quality - eg one manufacturer produced the whole stick of memory rather than a manufacturer buying in the memory chip and attaching it to it's own memory stick.
Complicated I know, but youy want major on major. That means major manufacturer chip on major manufacturers stick.
If you have 2 sticks of memory installed (eg 2 x 256k), try running with just 1 stick installed.
We used to waste £100000 with iffy memory. Get the best you can....

I agree with Andygo.
I've had more problems with bad memory than I care to mention, even Brand names such as Corsair, (value stuff) I now go for the best I can afford, last lot caused a rebuild of my PC as it corrupted XP on boot, complete rebooting session that destroyed the boot partition...yep bad news it was.

ok i have downloaded memtest86 3.2 on to a bootable floppy , rebooted i guess it starts doing its thing by itself i.e im getting 1000 & 0200 going down in a column in a random way on the left side of the screen, how long should this go on for i left it for half an hour and it just carried on 1000 1000 0200 randomly, is this the normal i have a 1 gig of ram is what is happening the test and roughly how long would you exspect it to take ?
Hello matey. What brand of memory did you get? And how many sticks.
Is it correctly defined in the Bios, in terms of cas latency etc, dual channel and other stuff.
When it boots up, does it run the memory test? Does it count it all and say OK before continuing etc.?
LB
PS Do I still owe you a disk of something?

Thank you all!
Couldn't get memtest running but got a microsoft test and guess what it failed 1 test off six, not every time but i guess enough to cause problems!
I tested each stick individually and they both passed every time, i tested them on their own in each socket and they passed every time but when both put in it started to fail again, have changed sticks with supplier for another brand tested and PASSED!, its early days yet but so far so good
Thanks for the advice! another very happy PH'er

I had similar problems with my new build, it turned out to be a dodgy DVD drive which seemed to work fine in my last puter. The only way of diagnosing it was remove a bit of hardware one at a time until it was ok.
Try the memtest and other suggestions first tho or take it back to where you bought it from.
