What about the built in Windows XP backup tool? It's not toooo bad and might do what you need

I use:

www.iomega.com/software/autobackuppc.html

To backup various folders spread across different disks, to another disk.

Has a scheduling function, plus how many (if any) revisions you want to keep etc.

Very pleased with it. Use it for the same reason as you > Pictures, + My Documents + my website + emails

use that, write a simple batch file to script the backup to run automatically through scheduled tasks. Perfectumundo

...or just use "scheduled tasks" to launch it...

Personally, I use BounceBack Professional from CMS software:
www.cmsproducts.com/product_bounceback_software.htm
It backs up my drive to an external Seagate USB drive. Very easy to use.

I'm considering Norton Ghost for future use.

I've seen a hard disk controller go mental and corrupt all the attached hard drives before. I wouldn't want my backup HD to be in the same machine (fire, theft...).

Up to you of course but I would consider CD or DVD for non-changing stuff such as videos, music, pictures and so on and ZIP/tape for the rest.

I have used SyncBack www.syncback.com/ for a couple of years to do something similar to what you require. It is quick, only copies changed files, easy to set up, has exclude lists etc. and it has kept all my data safe. Best of all it is freeware. Well worth looking at.

Sounds good and I dont need to spend money but only 2 problems

1) I didnt know windows had a back up tool and don't know where to find it.

2)Everything blairout wrote appears to be in English but I'm not entirley sure "write a simple batch file"?

Thanks for the suggestions guys trying to find the windows thing now. will give that a go first mainly for monetary reasons

Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup

(At least on XP Professional - not sure about XP Home)
