Hi all.

I've been on ebay at work today bidding on some parts for my 924. Now I'm at home trying to log on to ebay, every time I type in www.ebay.co.uk, instead of conecting my P.C. shuts down explorer, still keeps my internet conection open though. I've just got a new P.C. so not sure if it's me, my P.C. or them. Anyone else having problems like this?

Is it just ebay that's doing it?

Does it happen with ebay.com?

Might be worth posting in the Computers forums (or the mods will probably move it).

Are you running XP? This sounds like something has installed itself and is reacting to eBay. This happened to me with eBay some time back. I restored an earlier date through XP to undo the bogus install. All was well after that.

Hi tvrbob.

Yes, running XP but only got new P.C. today, plugged it in at 5.30, set google as home page, called up ebay .co.uk, explorer closed !!!
I,ll run AVG anti virus again now & see what comes up.

Stay tuned, let you know what happens.

Try going in through another route, this may avoid whatever is getting in your way

It is a long shot, but this thread may be worth a look.

Note, I am by not means a computer expert, I simply spend too much time on PH.

Ran AVG, nothing detected, says all OK.

Could it be to do with my settings? I've tryed changing some of them (security, content advisor etc) but doesn't change anything. I did manage to get as far as filling in my user name & password once, but as soon as I clicked to sign in, explorer closed again but did not disconect my server !?!?!?!

Try clearing all temporary files in tools>options

Also, install lavasoft adaware and spybot search and destroy. Install zonealarm (free version).

Sounds like its either just a bug, or you have a trojan. I suggest you log onto your ebay account on another computer, and immediately change your password, and check in 'my ebay' to see if anything is amiss.

Have you set up to allow cookies? Sites normally tell you if this requirement is stopping access though.

You say the PC is new but where was it bought from? The system could have been installed for some time. If so then restore is your best option.

Here is the essence of the thread I linked to :-

.....I cannot get to many sites (e.g. Hotmail and eBay) and the browser starts to load them but then switches back to "about:blank", so I cannot access these sites.

I run Norton Anti-Virus as my main protection, and have Zone Alarm and Spybot working as well. All 3 are useless at detecting or deleting this spyware / virus.

I have also tried:

* Ad-Aware
* Spy Subtract
* CWShredder
* Hijack This
* Startpage Guard

which don't work either (Hijack this might, but I don't have a clue how to read the output of it's scans).

With my extremely limited computing knowledge, I am guessing that there is some sort of programme constantly running that causes the .dll to re-spawn after I delete it manually - buy how to find and remove this programme?

Here is the link if you want to copy and paste:- www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=146990&f=95&h=0

Yes, set up for cookies.

Had P.C. built from scratch by Xenex in Birmingham. Ordered it yesterday, picked it up today.

Take it back. You paid for a working system, they sold you one with a bug. Get eBay bidding from another PC.

Havent read all of the forum so this might have been suggested already. If you've just downloaded SP2 then it may be problems with the pop-up blocker, a friend of mine was having problems the other week but didnt go into detail.

Right, got P.C. back from Xenex. Engineer who fixed it said it was a "corrupt C.P.U" new out of the box. Said he has never seen this problem before & he is sending C.P.U. back to manufacturer with a full report.

How can a corrupted C.P.U. only block ebay sites & not affect any others ????????

Is he trying to pull the wool over my eye's ?

Corrupt CPU? That's a steaming pile of bullshit if ever I heard one.

Still, if they have returned you a system that now works then I'd let it pass.

Installed P.C. at home last night, seems to be working ok apart from when I display any ebay page, any "ad's" on the page (you know the ones, pictures at top of page) do not display. Where "ad" should be it says I,m "not authorized" to veiw this page. I can live with this as all items in auctions display ok. Just wondered if I need to alter one of my setting.
