I'm trying to install XP Pro onto one of our PC's and can't get it to install.

Everytime it starts to copy the files from CD to HDD, it gets to the KBDUK.DLL file (27%) and fails to copy off the CD.

If I press ESC to skip the file, it fails to find the next, and the next, and the next . . . .

I've now tried 3 seperate copies of XP CD and all fail in the same place.

Anyone got any thought on how to get round this particular issue ?

My only thoughts are a HDD problem - is this realistic ?

Any help much appreciated,

Simon.

I've had this problem too.

It usually turns out to be a hardware problem - in my case it was dodgy memory.

Meant to add - I've tried 2 CD Drives.

I'll try removing some of the RAM.

Have you tried copying the CD onto the HDD before running the setup?

I assume to do this I need a bootable floppy to give me a command prompt and then literally just copy the entire XP disc to a temp folder on the HDD ?

Yep, a win 98 boot disk will do.

then run something like c:winxpcdi386winnt.exe

Check CD's are readable in another drive. I don't expect three of them to be faulty. Swap the working CD ROM into the U/S PC. If you suspect the memory swap it with a working XP pc. The last thing is that the HDD may have a fault or be configured incorrectly. Check the BIOS to see if you have any diagnostics. A full run of them will pick up any problem.

It doesn't appear to be the RAM, I've taken some from other machines and still have the same problem.

I'm currently trying to find a floppy drive to at least let me get to the command prompt and try and copy XP onto the HDD and install from there.

Is this XP Pro with SP1 or SP2 built in?

Standard XP Pro with no SP has issues with larger hard drives iirc. What size of partition are you trying to install it on?

ErnestM

PS: I believe KBDUK.DLL is the UK keyboard system file

Not wishing to seem annoying but.
You've tried the same disk on multiple computers and they all failing around the same place.
Assuming the various partition limitations aren't being breached.

I think your CD is knakkered mate.

Sorted the little bd

I happened to be near PC World earlier and bought a new hdd to try in this machine - I figured I'd always use a spare hdd elsewhere if it didn't solve the problem.

After installing the new drive, XP installs as sweet as a little sweet thing called sweetie.

I have no idea what caused the problem, but there you go !

Thanks for all the suggestions though - cheers guys

Simon
