As far as I'm aware, all the cameras I've had absolutely insist on installing the software before the first time you connect the camera to the computer.

Try it, and let us know.

Try plugging it in with out drivers. A lot of cameras the drivers are not more than getting windows to display "Sony Cybershot" instead of "USB Mass Storage Device", even through Windows XP can access it without them.

If it absolutley must have the drivers (damn thind) check the CD for scratches and give it a quick clean. Make sure you've got nothing else running or sat down by the clock (MSN, etc.) and try it again without the camera attached.

If it fails... swear alot and get a drink. Then try copying the CD to a folder on your computer, if it fails then either the CD drive or the CD itself is borked. You can try tracking down drivers for it from the manufacturers website normally. But they can be on the large side so if you've not got broadband try the other stuff first.

A professional photographer friend of mine advises never to use the software that comes with the cameras, and to buy a media card reader. After years of struggling with my poxy Olympus, I did as he advised and the whole thing now runs smoother than baby poo.

Card readers are cheap and well worth it.

As for the initial problem...

you may need to delete the camera device, then install the software, then connect the camera.

Typicaly if its USB install the software/drivers before plugging it in.

Go into device manager, select show everything (else it may be hidden) and delete the unknown/camera device and try again.
