I've had a lot of problems with connection to BT internet over the past few days - the connection (normally a 1.1mbps connection has been downloading at about 50bytes per second!! I've checked and rechecked my ADSL roter settings, been on to BT and the router helplines, and pinged and traced signals - all I get is some gateways timing out when using the "tracert" command line.

My "always on" connection is also dipping in and out all the time - I'm not sure whether it is the router modem that's at fault, as it seems to have problems detecting BT Internet setings - but it's an online setup, so if the internet is struggling to yield data, then the router would struggle to capture the setings it needs - so a bit of a circular argument there...

Is anyone else having similar problems?

No problems here, and the service status screen shows no known issues at any of the exchanges (To be fair I have found this page to be fairly accurate).

Have you tried resetting the router? I've had the odd experience like this and this resolves it for me.

Yes, thanks, i've tried this - it doesn't make any difference.

I've also tried repairing Windows (I don't fancy another full re-installation!) and that doesn't seeme to have helped either. it must be a software problem, but I agree that the router is somehow to blame.

I'm on here BT Broadband here (although I don't think that's the problem) and have suffered my router dropping the connection at random. On all the time maybe drops it after 5 days sometimes longer sometimes after just 2 days,

Went to the Netgear site (DG834) found I am 2 firmware upgrades behind and downloaded the two and upgraded my router with both in the right order. No problems since.

Have you checked yours?

Thanks FWD - the router I have (KCorp Lifestyle) has a net-based software system, so I log on to it and the firmware is kept on file at their HQ, so it's updated automatically every time I log on.

It has been strugling to get my DSL details from BT - which I'm assuming is due to the same fault as the general internet problem. I have rung BT this morning, and they feel I may have a faulty phone attached to the same socket - so I've got to unplug everything and see what happens. But I know all the phones are working. my Sky interactive is on the same line and doesn't work properly either - which to me suggests digital data is being corrupted or blocked somewhere.

BT's automated line tester hasn't revealed any faults however.

The weird thing is, my computer has gone funny as well - several shortcuts have started pointing to the wrong place, and several programmes have ceased to function - including, rather crucially, Outlook, which is unobtainable, as is the rest of MSOffice - so I have lost all my saved e-mail as well!

I'm a bit lost as to what to do next....

Oh Sh*t I hope this isn't the case with mine, I have been waiting for four months for BT to deliver a replacement router to my house, in the meantime I have been using a Netgear Wireless router from work. This has been showing an amber light for 90% of the time and I have spent ages on the tech helpline etc.

Due to the ongoing hassles of an intermittant connection I finally told them to stuff the service on Friday and have gone back to dial-up!!

I thought it was because we are a long way from the exchange in a rural village.

I will try the downloads before they properly disconnect the service.

Oh and they delivered the router an hour after I cancelled!

Sounds like you have a virus or trojan. Run your antivirus stuff. I know its hard if your net connection is down, but try and get latest virus definitions.

Your emails should be still on your pc. Run a search for *.dat files and you should locate them. Copy them to cd if you can.

Can you bypass your router and connect to adsl via the bt modem?
Have you an ordinary 56k modem you can use to connect to the net and prove your problem?

It's all a blinkin' nightmare innit?

Thanks everyone - I've managed to sort it out - I spoke to my IT-mad fellow doc at work, and he had exactly the same problem. The solution? Put an ADSL filter onto the main telephone socket (I had one on the broadband line, but not the main socket for the house), and hey presto!, instant resumption of normal broadband activity!

All that swearing and a whole weekend wasted for 30 seconds' worth of work....

Good to see it's fixed.
Did want to add one thing.
The most common thing people do with a trojan is use it to install an IRC warez bot (amongst other things). The most common one used is a legit program called iroffer, they bury it deep in the WindowsSystem?? tree, but if you do a quick shuffle for iroffer or any really large files burried in there you can usually tell if you've been 'rooted'.

Just an fyi, for those curious.

You might want to keep the packages being offered out... then slaughter the bot.
