Mike the technophobe here.

I have bought a webcam, and need to install it. It is a 'usb pc camera'.
My computer has usb set up, but when I install the set up disc it tells me it can't find the hardware.

I put "set up exe" in the run programs section and it tells me to go to control panel to set the hardware up.

Does anyone know what I have to do to start it off.

My computer has usb female ports in the front of the main gubbins, I presume this is the same as if it had some in the back.....

Any help gratefully received.
Mike.

Install the software, then plug in the USB webcam.

Should sort it.

Could feasibly be the other way around then, plug the cam in then install the software.

If you right click my computer and select 'manage'

In the tree on the right hand side will be a section called 'Device Manager'

If you look in there you should see an entry for USB Controller which should be enabled and working correctly if its not sort this out first then install the software.

Also, are you logged on as Administrator or a profile with Administrative priviledge?

I will try that plotloss, and see if it works.
No, I am not an administrator or anything like that, the webcam is purely to talk to mates overseas etc, and apparently is 'easy to install'

Dunno about webcams, but when I bought a media card reader, the instructions said plug it into the USB, then XP will "notice" it and ask you for the software, which it duly did. Two or three reboots later (!) and it was all working fine.

If the USB controller is installed and working then get hold of the Administrator login or change your XP account type to Administrator and then it may work...
