I seem to be getting lots of e-mails at the moment that arrive in the in-box with the icon showing that they have attachments, but in fact there is nothing attached.

I can't see a reason for this. Anyone?

Is that a hotmail account through OE? Outlook Express doesn't let you view the attachment for security reasons and you have to go to the actual hotmail site.

OE also has a bug in that it displays a phantom attachment if any line begins with the string "begin ".

I have three accounts, none of them hotmail, and the phantom attachments are not coming in from hotmail accounts either

If you are using OE, have you got it configured to allow attachments to be downloaded? If not it will show as an attachment (although the icon will be fainter) but not allow anything to open.

Not ticked, don't think it ever has been.

Attachments are downloaded into a separate folder to save accidental opening in case of infection. There is no difference in the icon between actual and phantom attachments

I'm seeing spam coming in recently which is a blank email that only has a picture embedded and attached - could be that is what you are seeing?

Brought this back up to the top as the source of the problem has been found. I use AVG anti-virus software and it has been certifying incoming e-mails. Unticked the relevant box and problem solved. Thanks for the suggested solutions.
