Ok, at the end of my patience. My own home desktop is Win2k which has be fastidiously managed for the last couple of years. However, recently Win Media Player went up the swanny. Wont play video at all now. No AVI, MPEG or even WM Format files! I thought it was DivX stuff, but it doesnt seem to be. Although its not perfect, I prefer WMP for web streaming etc.

I have tried everything to get it working again. Removal and re-install (as per Microsoft instructions), even resorting to MPlayer.exe to see whats going wrong. Even Mplayer has stopped working!

It plays the sound, just no video. Not the foggiest. Any ideas?

Contemplating upgrade to Windows XP (have licensed copy) but this would take ages to sort out to get back to where I am. I could do an upgrade I suppose, but I have heard that one problem area with this is Media Player and I want it to work again....

Arrrggghhh....

Are the video codecs still installed? I think you can check them from the "Sound" icon on the Control Panel.

this doesn't answer your question, but I use the free version of Zoom player

www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml

Which is the best player i've found in terms of features and being able to run absolutley anything. It can run unfinished AVI files, which is useful to find out if you are grabbing the correct file.

Download Media Player 10 and try that.

Also, download a utility called GSpot. It tells you what codec is required for a particular file and if you have it installed.
