Quick question.

Normally hate the notion of entertaining kids through TV in car....but going on a long road trip with my 6yr old.

She'll have her iPad with her anyway, but there are few movies that will fit on it as it's 90% full of st anyway - and she has buckets of DVDs/BluRays, so looking at a portable in-car DVD/BluRay option - the type that fixes to the back of the front seat. Preferably a stand alone unit rather than working off the car's DVD system.

Any recommendations?

Thanks Gents (and ladies)

Google "Rosen entertainment systems", I have one of these systems in my car and it's very good. Built into the headrests but independent from the car's audio. Comes with wireless headphones and DVD goes on top of unit.

How about getting something like this : http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/external-hard-drives/... that can be loaded up with files so she can stream them via the iPad instead ?

Thanks....but £800 for only a 7" screen system. Wow!! The full BMW kit is way less than that.

I need a portable system as well as it will go between at least three cars. Ones I'm looking at are £120-170 for 9" 2 screen systems.

Didn't say it was cheap but it is fully integrated and looks OE. You get what you pay for but admittedly, this is probably surplus to your needs. You can buy cheap ones on eBay for not very much money.

Thanks guys!

The hard-drive is an interesting solution...but I think for a 6 yr old, with a library of DVDs already, a £120 9" portable unit is probably the way forward.

Amazon here we come....

Thanks again fellas

What did you do in the end OP? Were doing a road trip in our X5 to Lake Garda with 3 kids in August this year. The eldest will have her iPad and she'll be in the 3rd row seating so just looking at entertainment options for a 3 and 6 y/o in the second rows.

Did look at the genuine BMW option (as found here here, but looks a little function limited. Being crash tested does appeal, marginally.

I only use the in car DVD players a couple of times a year so did not want to buy antging too expensive. A few years ago I bought some relatively cheap players (around £70 for the pair) from PC World. They came with quick release brackets to attach to the headrests and have served well on the half a dozen or so times they have been used (each time over a few weeks abroad). The inbuilt speakers are poor, but my dauthers use them with headphones. They are also able to play different discs on each screen or the same on both, this is a major improvement on the previous cheapies I had which could only play the same film on both screens.

Hmm, do you have a link?

Seems cheap, but I'd still go for a nice Android tablet that takes SD cards. Can take plenty of movies and portability is great.

This. For instance a Tesco Hudl2 - about £100, or currently £80 with a Tesco Direct 'new user' code.

Poorly worded on my part. My 14 y/o has her own iPad, saved up and paid for by her self. My wife has her own iPad 2 that the little ones have some limited use of but they certainly don't have their own!!

As a cheap solution I have recently bought one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/available-Bluetooth-Multi-...

and a 16GB SD card. Fitted loads of films on it. Battery life is poor especially when at full brightness 9which is needed) but I have them plugged in the car. I have used some sticky Velcro to the back and the headrest and all seems to work well....

The price has gone up just recently though... (I think I paid about £28 including P and P.)

Went for Voyager 9" DVD player from Amazon. c£70 and worked faultlessly. Daughter managed to use the remote control without hassle, quick and easy to get going.

The only issue is that it doesn't fit on the back of the seats in my 640d due to the high/bucket design. Fine in the other two cars though. Highly recommended.

Why? Its an iPad Mini, it was her Christmas gift 18 months ago. Been using at school since she started, teaching great tech skills that are likely to be as useful if not more than using a standard keyboard, educational and has fuelled her quest for knowledge.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Voyager-inch-Portable-Player-Mount/dp/B00H4P50MM/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt/275-0862240-1503841 - was £69.99 when we bought it, IIRC. Still great value at £79.99.

That looks remarkably similar to the ones I bought from PC World. They do a matched pair for similar money in 7inch or a little bit more for 9inch.
