Hi Guy's,

Got a new PC a couple of day's back and lastnight I tried to connect my broadband (Blueyonder) to it.

On my existing PC I have the cable modem connected via USB (no Network card). Looked at the blueyonder site thinking I would have to register the MAC address of the network card - but it said there's no need to now as they've upgraded the service and all I need to do is just plug it in, switch it on and reboot.

But guess what - it wouldn't work.

What am I doing or not doing? (not the most computer literate man in the universe either....)

I also have a CD that came with the broadband for installation - tried that also but it wouldn't pick it up.

Cheers

Chris

is your USB port OK

is your modem compatible with it (V2 vs V1)?

do you get 'found new hardware' message when conecting it?

Not going to use USB on the new PC as it has a network card which I'm going to use.

Does the NIC --> Cable modem need a crossover cable or a straight one? Which are you using? (I'm guessing that as TW installed it as USB they didn't supply the cable you're now using)

I'm using the newtork cable that TW left when they installed it, modem came with USB and network cable - so wouldn't have thought that would be a problem.

When TW installed BYbb at my gaff, I opted for the "no NIC" service (slightly cheaper install cost) as I already had one in the PC. The guy who did the install couldn't get it to work with my NIC, so swapped it out for a different brand... which also didn't work so he swapped it for another one again, at which point it was fine.

I'm pretty sure it would just have been a question of getting the settings right, but I guess with this kind of thing they've worked out its quicker (cheaper) overall just to swap hardware until it works out of the box.

Maybe give their tech support a call?

Are you trying to use USB and ethernet at the same time? That won't work....

Also, if you're switching from USB to ethernet, you will need to reboot the cable modem if you havent already dont so.

no not trying to use USB and ethernet - just going to use ethernet. Haven't tried re-booting the modem (I assume I just disconnect the power to do that??).

Doh! Didn't think to mention that as I assumed you'd have done that as a matter of course!

Leave it off for a few seconds and then plug it back in.

To be honest that was the only thing I didn't try last night. I did turn it of on the box - but that only put's it into stand-by.

I'm now feeling a bit stupid........
