Im going to leave out any useful explanations and let you guess what im talking about from this.

So. ive got my magical javascript which when you hit enter in the textbox is calling doPostback with the control name, but I have no idea what the second parameter it wants is or where to get it.

some example stuff said:
javascript:__doPostBack('designpage$content$calendar','1838')

What is the 1838 here and how can I get the corresponding value for another control?

From my limited understanding of the ASP postback mechanism I think the two arguments are the server-side object to send the update to and the value to be passed to it. I would guess that the magic number has some specific significance to the calender object you name with the first argument, perhaps there is some clue in what you are trying to do when you cause this function to be invoked? Hopefully you have some way of finding the API, otherwise this is likely to be an uphill struggle!

interesting. ive been trying to do this from a standard button. if i change it to a linkbutton and leave out the second argument it works fine....

Im not actually doing anything calendar related, that was an example. sorry

Ive sidestepped the problem by realising the code i was using was unnecessary and i could do it all in javascript

(internal website, all clients will have javascript enabled)
