Hi,

I'm ready to tear my hair out.
I bought the netgear DG834GT modem and wireless router, as well as the WG311T PCI card.

I installed the PCI card fine and am with BT broadband, but I can't get the router to connect to the net (its plugged in with the rj45 to set it up). All the lights are present and correct, but setup wizard cant get me connected.

I called BT no help and Net gear: callcentre in India or something, so less help.

Go on make my day, please!

So in the setup wizard were you selecting auto-detect or configuring it yourself?

Auto detect, it looks for a connection bring up a router detail screen but when I bring up the connection test screen it says "no connection" CHAP failed etc..

Perhaps check the settings used for the DSL the ones in mine are:

Multiplexing Method - VC BASED
VPI - 0
VCI - 38
Encapsulation - PPPoA

Then it should be a case of entering your user name and password, setting either dynamic or static IP and the DNS setting and you should be away.

I checked the VCI and VPI are correct with BT (0 and 38)

I also had and Xbox I used directly into the LAN before the old moden was USB voyager, not sure if this affects things.

Not sure, if it helps this machine is running the old SpeedTouch USB software (as I havent removed it yet) in addition to having a Cat 5 connection to the DG834 thats doing the DSL modem work.

Sounds curious this...

I'm on BT used to have a Voyager Modem and went to a Netgear Router DG834 (albeit not the wireless model)

The only difference to above is that my Multiplexing method is set to LLC-Based instead of VC-Based.

Rest is the same.

Works fine, I didn't do anything with the setup myself , it just sorted itself out on install/

Mine is set to VC based, perhaps I should try LLC based?

I'll have to call netgear and BT again tonight..

Thanks Guys

I had to fit the PCI card into the slot where I removed the PC's internal modem board.. dunno if this affects things.

It shouldnt because the DG834 is doing the connection, if you can get to the box to view the settings, then the network card works.

I thought so, because when I checked the wireless connection it had full signal on channel 11.

If you can get to the router config pages then the problem is not with the PC as tcpip needs to be working for you to get to the router web pages. you may have other problems later with dns etc but if you can get to the router then thats ok for now. The router connection test is saying that it is not connected so I think there is some thing wrong on the router login settings.

I have used the auto detect on these and it seems to work so try using the bt test login and see if that connects. It may be a problem with username and password

BT test login
username = bt_test@startup_domain
passowrd = ignored

Had a similar problem when trying to use a Vigor router with BT ADSL.

On the BT business help site they have the router settings as follows (auto-detect didn't work for me either).

VPI number: 0
VCI number: 38
Authentication: CHAP
Modulation: G.DMT
Encapsulation: PPP over ATM (PPPoA)
Virtual Circuit Multiplexing (VC-MUX)

After doing this and putting in the username and password the router connected after about 5 seconds.

I hope this helps you.

do you have to put a username and password in on your BT service?

In the router status page there should be a test button at the bottom, to test the connection - this should bring up a pop up window where you can see what stage the line is getting to - if LCP comes up, then your service is fine, if CHAP fails then its your username/password

On the router status page are you getting an IP address on the ADSL/WAN port - if so then the problem is local to the PC

also - theres some lated firmware for the DG834GT on the Netgear website that may be worth a try if you are having CHAP authentication issues

Hi All,

I managed to get it working. Don't ask me how, I got a champion at netgear call centre this time to help.

He talked me through it and we got it after a couple of attempts.
I think the main problem was my norton internet security firewall blocking the connection!!

Then he helped reset my wireless connection to 108 Mbps.

I'm chuffed its working, and thanks all again for you advice and help.
