I have a dual G5, Windows media player and Quicktime I PAID for and I cannot play .avi videos very often. What gives? I have checked for latest downloads, I only get sound and no video.

Is there a solution?

FWIW I downloaded the divx and still nothing.

Try downloading this codec and try again: www.3ivx.com/download/index.html

Or just use VLC player which will open almost any format: www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Most likely they are encoded in the indeo codec. An obscure and useless Microsft codec that has started to become more widely used since OSX has started to take off. I wonder why that could be

There is an indeo codec for OS9, but it hasn't been reverse engineered for OSX yet.

If this doesn't play it - it probably isn't playable!

Exactly the same system I have, BUT I download every video codec I can find for Quicktime and can play 99% of what I download.

AVI is just a wrapper for MPEG4, so the format could be quicktime, DivX, or XviD.

This is my list of Quicktime codes:

3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX
AC3 Codec.component
ACTLComponent.qtx
AXELplayer.qtx
DivX 5.component
DVCPROHDCodec.component
FCP Uncompressed 422.component
ffmpeg DivX.component
FFusion.component
FLAC_Decoder.component
KinomaExporter.component
lame 3.92.shlb
Microcosm Decode.component
Microcosm Encode.component
MP3.component
msmpeg4v1.component
msmpeg4v2.component
None16.component
OggVorbis.component
OggVorbis.qtx
On2_VP3.qtx
On2_VP3_as_autoupdate
on2vp3.component
OpenDivX.component
PSIKey.shlb
QTFbx.component
QTMPEGExport.component
QuickTimeIIDCDigitizer.component
RealMediaExporter.component
SheerVideo™ Pro.qtx
SheerVideo™ Reader.qtx
Sorenson Video Pro OSX.qtx
Toast Video CD Support.qtx
TSCC.component
WMA Audio
XviD_Codec v0.3.component

Thanks people. The answer is in this post I'm sure I just need to start working on it. I might get that alternative player.

One other question having to do with my relative newness to mac. When I downloaded the Divix (this applies to a Real Player I downloaded too) I get an icon on my desktop that seems to be the software not just the install file. How do I hide this icon so it is not always on the desktop?

Thanks a ton everybody! I can finally get my Vicki Butler Henderson fix.

VLC

Not the best player in the world, but does play just about everything.

Anyone else have problems rewinding and fast-forwarding on it though?

Yep. The other player to try is MPlayer, also available from OS X downloads.

If a movie won't play in Quicktime player, get movie properties from 'movie' menu (command J), left hand pull down to 'Video Track', right hand pull down to 'Format'. At the bottom will be the codec that was used to make the movie. You can then google for it, bung it in the system and, hopefully, it will work.
