I wonder if the PH tech people can help me with my little problem:

I've finally bought an mp3 player and am ripping some of my CDs to put on it, unfortunatly I've hit a snag when it comes to compilation albums. Just pressing 'Rip' in Mesia Player 10 gives the artist's name as 'Varios Artists' then the track name as 'Blur - Song 2' (for example). Is there a way to show the artist's name correctly, in media player or some other software? I know freeripmp3 used to do this but it seems the current version has adware in it.

There's lots of ripping software on download.com, does anyone know what ones satisfy my needs?

TIA

EAC (Exact Audio Copy) is great
You can specify exactly how you want the track names written, and automatically pull the names from freedb so it's literally two clicks and you have a directory full of MP3s!

Are you sure it is coming up with Various Artists in the "Artist" tag and not under "Album Artist" , on most of my compilations it has managed to label the Artist correctly but you have to look under the "Contributing Artist" menu to see all songs from that artist otherwise you only get listing for the complete albums.

Failing this and if you do not have loads you can always edit the info by right clicking the track and using the advanced tag editor.

As for other software have used MusicMatch in the past and was very good. Have not used recently as happy with MP10 so cannot vouch for latest version, it may also come with adware by now or nag you to upgrades as seems very common nowadays.

Good luck.

It's not even detecting my CD drive.

I can't see an "Album Artist" tag anywhere, if I pull up the ID tag through Winamp it tells me the track title contains both the artist's anme and the track title. I'm not going to go through all my music editing the tags if I can help it!

Hmm not sure why it's not detecting your drive, that's something you'll need to check on the EAC site.

Either way if you need to "mass-edit" ID3 tags then I can recommend ID3-Tagit, the best bit of software I've used in ages

www.id3-tagit.de/english/index.htm

It will let you set ID3 tags from the filename, swap ID3 tags around, set ID3 tags on multiple files at once, automatically pulls the data in from freedb if you want (cool feature) etc etc.

I use CDex and it seems to do ok, you can always rename the tracks yourself.
