I've been asked to resolve a problem with Outlook while abroad.

They have a bt address user@btinternet.com which is accessed from the UK with no issue for six months of the year. They have a holiday home in Portugal with broadband which has worked until now.
The last couple of days they've been able to receive email but unable to send.
SMTP settings are exactly as laid out here: BT settings. Also tried defaults and without SSL.
When sending it fails with an error 522 Your message has not been sent as you are accessing your email over an unsecure or untrusted connection. BT page here: click.
This is a trusted, secure connection that they 'own'.
BT's online help provides no more than that linked above.
Telephone support is worse than useless - ultimately, the incompetents I've spoken to blame MS/Outlook and say it's not their problem.

Any ideas please chaps?

NB A workaround is sending via the Exchange connector but I'm sure he'll start getting issues getting blocked as spam sending emails from a BT address via a different domain. For his private email he really needs to send/receive via btinternet address.

It may be that BT have blocked the source IP range:

"If we think the connection you're using is unsecure or untrusted, then we'll show you an error 522 message when you're using your email. This could be because we've previously detected illicit activity on the connection you're using or because somebody who previously used this connection has been sending spam emails."

They could try signing up for a VPN service which will give them a UK IP address. Most of the providers ahve free trial accounts:

Ian,

Have you tried a different email client / device?

Last year when travelling in Spain and Portugal my iPad started to play up accessing BT mail. The ONLY solution which worked was to setup the Account again in the Mail Client.

Whilst I was "fixing" it, I had numerous requests to change the BT password.

Never did get to the bottom of the actual problem.

Maybe worth trying something like Thunderbird if no Tablet available to try.

Is that the same as logging into his BT Mail account via a browser?

I don't know why that would cause an issue with his email being seen as spam?

I find BT Mail hardly ever works when I'm travelling. I've moved al important personal stuff to Gmail.
