Whenever I vist a page with some new fangled java type thing on it, firefox always asks me to install teh missing plug-in, but when i click to do it the damn thing never downloads it .. just sits there all smug and laughing at me.

Is there a manual way to install anything it asks me to? at this rate I'll be switching back to IE if I don't get it sorted, it's annoying having to fire up IE just to see what I'm missing! even though in every other respect firefox is great

goto http://java.sun.com and download the j2se.

1.5 is the new standard, but most of us programmers still are working with 1.4.2.x...

You've probably got Firefox set up to not download/install anything!

Go to 'Preferences:Web Features:Allow web sites to install software"

If this is checked then you need to click on the 'allowed sites' button next to it to add the relevant site details.

no I had the same problem with Firefox - it isn't recognised by the Java plugin that it's actually a browser and hence nothing is installed.

You definitely need to go to the Sun website and download the latest Java VM.

I'm running Firefox 1.0 (under Win2k) and when I go to a Java site it kicks off the "Java Webstart" app on my machine and it all works fine.
