Check the boot device order in the BIOS

It should be

Floppy
CD-ROM
HDD0

All things being equal.

If this is what its set to and it still wont boot from the CD (which I presume is bootable) then I too am somewhat stuck.

it is
the trouble is that ive got dual boot on that machine which doesnt help. (98 on one hdd and xp on the other).
unfortunately the disks are formatted differently so that the 98 partition cant see the xp side even when it was working.
still get the BSOD on startup. may well be time for some shopping

What does the BSOD say?

I'm guessing something like "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE"

???

Can you not try a repair? All you need are the system files reinstating, and Roberts your fathers brother (unless the HDD has thrown a 7)
