Destined not to finish this build?
Discussion
It's like one step forward and three back! Had problems originally because of a dud mobo. Now got a an Abit AS8. Thought I wouldn't have too many problems. Oh no!!!
Of the last 24 hours
-ings the current "challenges" are that the BIOS is apparently not ACPI Compliant (well according to Microshaft XP Setup anyway. I can (although it's literally HIT and miss with the F7 key) sometimes get past this and partition the drive (brand new SATA drive), format it and start setup. However, setup gets about 75% through and then I get error messages where it keeps failing to be able to copy files.
this seems a bit odd. I can ESC and skip one, but then there are a raft more adn eventually Windoze says "that's enough" and closes down. Am wondering if this means (as well as original mobo) my fancy new HD is kaput?
Am I just being unlucky - never had so many issues before!?

As an addition install the latest BIOS onto the Mobo before installing XP.
The reason for this is even if you get past the ACPI error if its set wrong it will configure the HAL wrong and you cant change that without reinstalling...
If you try XP again after the BIOS update and it still doesnt work there are still things we can try before resorting to swapping out components...

Disable ACPI and try again...
I like this sort of logic. In fact, I like it so much that I was wondering if this was possible (in my sleep last night).
I am probably being thicker than a whole forest of short planks, but how?
Should be a switch for it in the BIOS.

i know this sounds silly but are you using the same windows cd? it could just be a dodgy cd failing that can you check on the microsoft website for any conflicts for your set up
Not silly, at all. It is a new M-shaft XP. An update version actually. Verifiable with a 98SE CD.
And yes, I was thinking of loading up 98 as an alternative (just before everything gets chucked in the canal...)

Download and update the BIOS
The ACPI settings were evidently knackered on previous releases...

That's what I thought. Being the persistent little beggar that I am I have been hunting through for it again and again.
Am raiding the Abit website for the BIOS flash - my (earlier today, so perhaps it's busy in Taiwan!) it's a slow site!
Edited to add: you were there before me! Cheers Matt! I can feel the positive vibes - cheering me up already

Link above to the quick US version of the BIOS download.
If its not immediately apparent where the ACPI switch is it could either be not there or under another name.
ACPI is the standby/power interface so not having XP support isnt going to harm anything its just getting XP to ignore it...

I've been wondering about this. I've swapped the HAL on an NT4 server box before for DR purposes to modern harware and was wondering if its possible on a 2000 machine. Just my home PC doesn't have an ACPI copmpliant HAL due to a mobo upgrade from non ACPI to ACPI (couldn't be bothered to re-install)
Anyone tried it?

Not sure, might be worth a punt though if you have a backup.
If you right click the Computer in the Device Manager this will tell you what mode the HAL is in. But you probably already knew this.
Win2K is perhaps a little cleverer with its enumeration than NT4 though so I would be wary on that basis as you may end up with 2 of every component as far as Windows sees.

Not such a big jump from the 9800XT which by all accounts is a cracking card especially at the price point but I was leaving behind my geforce 2 MX workhorse so the 6800 is a revelation. I almost went for the 9800pro 128 but thought what the hell and went for the latest gen card. If the X800pro had been in plentiful supply (had it a few months now) I would have had one as I think they just edge out GT. Depends whether its running opengl or Direct X
Mine does overclock to ultra speeds but I have it at stock as it doesn't need the extra pace yet. Maybe later.
Wondered how long it would take for the twin gpu stuff to arrive. History repeating itself a la voodoo cards.

Something similiar posted on here a couple of weeks ago and the concensus was check your RAM. Other guy had tried multiple CDs and drives.
Dunno whether he got it sorted
C'est Moi !
It isn't the RAM as I have substitured it froma nother machine and still have the same problem.
The box concerned is still sitting on my office floor awaiting rebuild.
More results as it occurs.
