all the organo-compounds and poisonous substances on it get released into the atmosphere if it's incinerated or buried and can help contribute towards cancer of the penis and other nasties, but with the disposal for free i doubt you'll be able to do it, you'll probably have to pay a small fee to get it taken away

Your local waste tip should have a section on the site where they take away electronic bits and pieces for (hopefully) correct disposal.

You're not supposed to throw anything that contains a micro chip away. They have to be recycled or disposed of by the correct methods (don't quite know what that is). I work for a waste disposal company and we are not supposed to take anything with micro chips in.
So that's it realy, just bin it.

Most local municapal sites (that's tip to most people) have a section for old computers, usually next to the car battery bit.

Last time I went it didn't cost anything to dump a dead PC there.

I sent an email to Reading Council:

Hello there,

I have an old PC I wish to dispose of and I was wondering the best way to do this?

I would rather not visit the 'civic amenity site' - as queuing there for 45 mins and then being shouted at by someone with little else to do but inspect every miniscule item I'm depositing doesn't really fit in to my weekend schedule.

Your ideas are appreciated!

At least you refrained from saying "being shouted at by some jumped up Little Hitler"

FYI - Bracknell tip have a seperate container for old electronic equipment and if you go on a Sunday you could park by Brackenll tyres - walk across with it - so no queues. btw Bracknell tyres can't be beaten on price from my experience.

The response wasn't as rude as my email - RBC never seem up for the fight
