If only I understood PCs!

Had fun and games with a few aspects of my latest build.

One thing that's a godsend was a cheap (about a fiver) card reader built in - it's even got an extra USB port so I have three on the front now....

Anyway I digress.

The gut feeling I get is to suspect your CD is bu££ered. I assume that the CD drive has coped with everything else? can you download the software from the manufacturers site?

(I assume also that you're still running XP?)

Mustn't keep making these assumptions

If using Win XP and a USB camera, my advice is forget the manufacturers CD. The drivers you need are built into Windows itself.

In theory you should just plug the camera in, turn it (into playback mode for some models) and then Windows should just detect it.

Give it a few seconds then have a look in My Computer or Windows Explorer and see if and extra drive has suddenly appeared. If it has, you're off and running; if it hasn't then i'll scratch my head some more.

Might work but only if the camera has been designed to show up as a drive. My canons don't. Best bet is just to get a usb card reader. Far less hassle.

I have an Olympus POS and Nikon DLSR. I connect them directly via USB and both are detected by my PC (XP) as removeable HDs - I don't need any extra software.

Give it a go, nothing to lose.

Also thought - some digital cameras (I believe - still saving up for something as you're all tired of me saying ) have a firewire connection? (As well as USB) Is this your problem in any way?

If it's any consolation - which it's probably not - I had a devil's own job reading an existing Microsoft Money file with my new install of XP Home.

OK it's not directly related, but my approach to fixing the problem was to leave it alone for 24 hours and come to it fresh. I ended up trying that approach three times. Three days later I got there (somehow). Whatever the problem I had was probably so simple, yet I couldn't see it.

You're not alone!

Have you tried googling for any techie sites where this driver is discussed?

I seem to remember that the CD that came with my Ixus was very specific about the order in which you did stuff.

IIRC you had to load drivers from the CD before getting the camera anywhere near the PC to stop Windoze trying to be clever.

Basically RTM and do exactly waht it says. If you've already messed it up, it might be a case of rolling XP back to a restore point prior to when you started fiddling and starting over.

{edited to add:} I recently plugged a different Canon camera into my PC, figuring that if the Ixus was ok, this one would probably work. XP crashed almightily and refused to reboot for the rest of the day (cue panic!). Seemed to sort itself out by the evening, though.

That's odd, the driver for my Ixus has been nowhere near my PC. Plugged it in, detected and the "Windows Scanner And Camera Wizard" took me through dowloading my photies. The manual is in French though, so it quite possibly does have some specific instructions in tere somewhere.

Get into the Device Manager

My Computer>Right Click>Manage

Open up the tree until you find USB devices and select the camera. Delete the device. Uplug the cables. Install the driver software, connect the camera.
