no more IE horrors for me, well touch wood. Decided to leave the dark side and see the light and download Mozilla's firefox and thunderbird (browser & mail client). Excellent so far. I was fighting a loosing war with ugly trojans and deeply lodged spyware, and have been thru all the fixes so i rid myself of them, but each attack and defence is like a battle, and way too much hassle to keep them at bay. I recommend others to give it a go.

Another vote for Firefox. Started using it having read all the posts about it on here. 6 months later and I can count the number of times I've used IE on one hand.

Useful plugins you may want to try are Adblock (so you can easily block specific ads, or ones from a certain ad supplier - I'm looking at you doubleclick.net), All-In-One Gestures (use mouse gestures to control browsing) and Spellbound (a spellchecker).

I'd add to the list the Gmail notifier, the Athens toolbar (for all the PH students out there) and Tabbrowser Preferences.

I'd simply never go back.

I didn't have much choice about downloading it yesterday as some respawning trojan virus stopped me from opening IE So short of reinstalling XP, looks like Firefox is all I can use for now... seems to work ok though

Use Firefox when I remember and love it, its like an old-fashioned browser applicationthat just browsed and did it well, rather than the bloatware we have to suffer these days.

Alas, as my clients all use IE for the applications we write for them I end up using IE all the time

Need to lok & see but some of the sites my lot have created have a problem with firefox..maybe to do with authentication, maybe to do with https, maybe to do with domono apps, maybe something to do with stuff I havent a clue about. But dont care as they are all heavy duty corporate web apps; all i care about at mo, is that personal stuff is better with Firefox.

I've tried Firefox as I wanted to compare it with my defacto browser choice "Fast Browser" www.fastbrowser.net/ which has great options for using tabbed pages instead of multiple windows. I've tried most add-ons for Firefox but I cannot get the tabs to appear at the bottom of the window. Am I missing something obvious?

They appear on top under the toolbars in Firefox. [Ctrl]+LMB click or MMB click or RMB-menu: "open Link in new tab" does it.

Install this extension, go to "Tools", "Options", "Tabbed Browsing" and near the bottom is an option "Place the tab bar on the bottom of the window"

Never really liked Firefox - always found it a bit unprofessional. Nice features though, such as tabbed browsing etc. IE does me ok (have plenty of security software to compensate though).

Used Safari on my Mac Mini for the first time yesterday. It's very quick. Similar to Firefox, but more professional looking.

I've been using FireFox for the last couple of months, and although initially sceptical (all the "next big thing" apps I have tried over the years have ended up being dead ends), I have got used to using it - blocks popups automatically, I like the tabs too.

One annoyance is that it takes a while to start up under 2000 Professional - I suspect because 2K loads a proportion of IE on boot, meaning that it appears to have a short startup time.

Now I have just installed XP, and am downloading FireFox again, but, I'm wondering if Thunderbird is any good? A number of people have recommended it to me, but I do have a couple of questions :

1) can I import my .pst files from Outlook 2000?
2) can I export my TB mail files back to Outlook 2000 .psts if it ends up being a bit pants?
3) are there any anti-spam addins like SpamBayes for Outlook?

Cheers,

Thunderbird doesn't have Hotmail support, which was a bit of a show stopper for me.

I use Thunderbird for my emails, it's true that it doesn't support Hotmail, but I''ve read somewhere that Outlook doesn't anymore. You can import address book entries, mail preferences and mail messages from other programs (so it says when I pressed import, I've never tried it though).

It has a built in junk mail filter which seems to work fine, but I've got an email account that doesn't get much spam.

As with Firefox, there are loads of extensions you can download, the only one I use is Thundertray that minimises Thunderbird to the system tray.

Thanks - had no idea that Outlook supported hotmail, I don't use it anyway.

How does TB store mail? Does it use .pst files or some other kind of "single file" method?

Hmmm....

I am very tempted by it, but alarmed by some of the threads in the support forum :

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39

Lots of problems with importing mail/contacts, let alone exporting, so I am nervous of importing 8 years of Outlook emails into the new program!

Would be nice to start from scratch, but it is handly to have everything searchable in one program (with an archive .pst file).

Trouble is, Outlook 2k is really quite pants...
