Would any PH web site owners like to exchange links with me?

My main site has a PR of 4, and the “links page” has a PR of 3. It would be great to do some reciprocal linking with some other PHers and boost each others page rank.

NB: If your not familiar with PageRank, to put it very simply the more sites that link to your site, the higher the page rank your site gets, thus the higher up the rankings it comes in Google (and others). Links need only be text based, and not placed with users in mind – they serve only for search engine spiders and not placed to generate real click throughs.

Please post here, or send me a PM if you want to exchange links.

The news on all the SEO forums at the moment is that reciprocal linking is dead since Google et al cottoned on to it.

See this article.

I wouldn’t be so sure, its been working well so far for me and all clients sites.

Even if its not as effective as it was with google, it still helps with other engines and increases spider traffic.

Its still very well worth doing and remains a major part of SEO.

I don't think PR is all it's cracked up to me. Take for example a search on the term "TVR Hire" on google.

Result one is some dodgy portal page (which is getting more and more typical of google results) that has a page rank of 0. Meanwhile I've spent many hours getting our site up to second and have a page rank of 4.

Almost every other site on page one has a PR of zero.

From my experience with google, I think that incoming links are all that matters (not reciprocal links) with content coming a distant second.

However, other search engines aren't the same, and I was able to achieve top listings on most using content alone.

Its very largely down to KW Density, but no point in discussing SEO in this thread – I’m just looking for links because I personally know it works.

I've heard that Google realise this and are adjusting their ranking algorithm to weight content more heavily and put less reliance on linking (particularly reciprocal linking)

But I could be wrong.

I hope you are right - My content got me first place listing on every search engine except google - where I was languishing on the second page. Only when I had LOTS of incoming links did I get up to the first page. It's a system that used to work but now is just too easy to exploit - as evidenced by the increasingly poor results that google returns for searches.

Here's how I see it

Do a search for "adobe acrobat"

The 1st result is www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Why?

Not because it's got the right keywords on the page but because hundreds of thousands of websites have the "get acrobat" button on there website effectively telling google what it's linking to using alt text / link text.

For example

If you had a link to your website with the link text "tvr hire" this would be very much more effective than a link with the text "click here for xyz tvr's".

You can see this pattern with pretty much anything you type in. i.e. ask your how microsoft.com come's up no 1 for "microsoft".

you know it makes sense
