Another database package popular with business users is Goldmine - not used it, but believe it to be one of the best going. Act is another as mentioned above.

I have a number of clients who've moved from Goldmine and ACT! to SalesLogix, they are bigger commercials however so have high budgets.

I've seen them access contact details over WAP and update aa lead through a text message, so it is quite advanced.

Probaably therefore costs quite a lot, where-as the top ACT! version is sub £500 per seat, as I beleive is Goldmine.

I use a recruitment database called RDB, although its specific for recruitment, it could be used for sales and they will also give you a basic version with one licence FOC.

Went through this a while ago looking to get software for 'er indoors.

Wish I had known about this back then. I ended up completely customising ACT 6.0 to look like a recruitment package...

ACT 2004 can be accessed through the net via IIS. ACT 2005 does not have that capability yet as they have moved to SQL Desktop engine (Regular ACT) and full SQL (Pro ACT). Pro 2005 can be accessed via terminal server, however...

I'm sales manager at one of the largest Saleslogix and ACT businesses in the UK. Send me a message if you want some not so impartial advice. Usual Pistonheads discounts apply...

I started using ACT! with the sales guys here but the bugs became too much to bear and we developed one ourselves (viable because we're a software house). We've had talks about selling ours as a product but this won't be for atleast another 6-12 months if ever.

From what I've read and been told Goldmine is expensive and best suited at enterprise level.

One you might wish to look at which I've read a bit about in marketing mags is www.salesforce.com

The new version of ACT is ridiculously good value, and will be really popular. If I owned a small business and had a fairly simple CRM requirement (ie want to use a standard product with little or no amendments), I'd go for ACT. if I was after a CRM solution tailored to my needs with multiple hierarchies, automated sales processes, enhanced security, web access, campaign management, support features, integration to other applications, etc, etc, etc I'd go for Saleslogix.
Entry price for an ACT system is a few hundred quid. Entry price for Saleslogix is really more like £5000.

we took the one licence package - RDB Start and then paid for the full product as we have expanded. Ive found it to be very good with excellent backup and training.

Here is one which has been having good success:

www.salesforce.com/

Its a hosted solution and is relatively painless. And this is from someone who from a business perspective has implemented Siebel, so I know pain.

Depends if a hosted solution is your thing or not. What if you web connection goes down or you want off line access? Sage have got a hosted solution now to counter this threat, called MME (from the Accpac acquisition).
Most people want hosted solutions not because it is hosted, but because their is little or no capital outlay with monthly rentals. We offer interest free rentals on all systems (if you're a decent credit risk), and this can include implementation, training, support and hardware, so giving the best of both worlds.

Anyway, enough of work stuff, I should be choosing the next bike to buy at this time of night...

I wasnt getting into a hosted .v. own debate. I could have done a complete review of CRM systems, but this isnt the place. He can have a look at the hosted solutions and match against need and if not right then enjoy making the decision for the solution from the countless ones out there.

Goldmine can run on a server using DBASE or SQL. SQL is recommended if you have more than 10 users. Talk to ClearIT about it. You can download a demo version that works for 30 days as well.
