You can exclude the use of IE using a system policy. I cant remember which switch it is but if you google for IE Windows Policy it should throw something up.

How is your internet connection being shared?

Could you not block the machine's IP address at source (ie. if using Internet Sharing then at the computer actually connected to the internet, or if using a router then using the router's settings)

Connection is through a router ,I can stop the ip address of the PC but that would also stop email I believe

It's on the advanced tab, and then under settings for the connection you want to block from the net. It's definitely not intuitive, but it should do the trick. THe advantage is that will stop all browsers!

Had a look under the advanced tab on setting for the connection , at the top it states "select the services running on your network that Internet users can access" all of these boxes are un-checked and everything works .Does this not just stop incoming attempts or am I looking in the wrong place .

Cheers

You're right, I haven't used it before.... It appears to suck as a firewall.

Does the user get e-mail from an internal server or one on the internet?

The quickest and easiest way without setting up TCP filters would be to remove the proxy settings (If you use one) and set the default gateway to a ficticious address if the mail server is internal.

Not perfect, but it'll do the trick

In that case, how about putting ZoneAlarm on it and disabling IE from the allowed programmes?

A good hard smack over the head with a copy of the Yellow Pages has always done well to sort out internet misuse in my experience.

IE is fairly good at disabling itself. Just search for an article on the net about a fundamental file used by IE and rename it.

On the internet router it should have some sort of firewall and most will allow you to do this

enter
Ipaddress of pc - subnet mask of 255.255.255.255

this makes the rule apply to this pc only and leave the rest alone.

If it filter in and out seperately then just kill outbound

port 80 = block/deny/kill/murder/dumpdownbigblackhole
port 443 = ditto

All technical terms correct at time of going to press

hopefully your router has this capability

PS mail will still work because it uses

DNS = port 53
pop3 = port 110
smtp = port 25

as you only killed

80 = http
443 = https (secure http - online banking etc)
