I need to get an idea of what the current rates for my job are for my review next week.

Does anyone know anyone I could send my job spec to and they tell me how much they'd recommend a comapny pay if they were placing the same position??

Cheers

You could just check jobserve for similar roles in your location. Failing that, post a general job spec up here and I'm sure there are plenty of people who could give an indication.

I've checked Jobserve and Hays personnel etc. but they're a bit vague, I would much rather have an expert 'price up' my job description, better ammunition then

Just be aware that recruitment consultants aren't impartial, they are there to make money, which can mean under-speccing and over-valuing a job in order to get lots of applicants. In my experience they are (sweeping statement) slightly less trustworthy than a second hand car salesman.

Be aware that when Jobserve says "25-28k" what the original company usually want to pay is 24-25k.

I wouldn't trust a recruiter further than I could comfortably spit a rat. And having been exposed to them from both sides now, I can say that they're no better with clients than with recruitees.

The last one I dealt with lied to me about the location of the job and the salary, and lied to the client about my salary expectations. And that's about par for the course.

Why don't they understand that I don't want to take a similar job paying the same amount? What is the point in the upheaval of changing? Or that I don't want a two-hour commute each day ....

'Can you send in your CV?'. No I can't!

having also worked both sides.. rec con's are indeed worse than estates agents and car salesmen...

use www.computerweekly.co.uk and go into career moves to guide approximate guide..

If you are working consultancy side then use www.top-consultant.co.uk

No salary checker will give you exact as all depends upon company strucutre, location, value of position etc etc.. but remember never to sell yourself short when moving from one job to another.. and when they get tough about money, always retort "why would I?" and put the question back to the interviewer, would they move job for no or little salary increase ?

Most people hate interviewing so make them squirm too :-)

Good luck

I can recommend the job agency that got me my new job - www.computerfutures.com/

Certainly their bath office anyway. I was in touch with Alice there and she was absolutely the best any agent could have been, completely destroyed my preconceptions.

I'll try and be as diplomatic as possible and will simply say that I'm glad you had a good experience with them. You must be about the only one.

(Mind you, I speak from the standpoint of being a contractor and hence dealing with agencies' contract divisions. Perhaps the wage slave depts are different)
