Hi I'm having problems at the moment with IE6 hanging after a few minutes of surfing. IE6 stops responding then XP hangs and I have to press the reset button on the PC. Also sometimes I get a pop up giving a Generic Host Process error.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like a spyware/adware or virus infection to me. Try AdAware and Spybot and also do a full virus scan with and up to date checker.

All these checks are best done in safe mode (press F8 at boot before the Windows splash screen appears.)

Oh and when you have done all that, as the previous poster says, go here and get Firefox and ditch IE6 for good. You will be doing yourself a BIG favour.

I've already got SpySweeper running and recently done a sweep in Safe mode. The last time it hung I had task manager up and there were about 3-4 instances of svchost.exe and one of them was running at 90%+ CPU usage!!
So is this an XP or IE6 problem?

Thx

Well if you did as we adviced and downloaded firefox as a replacement for IE6 you could tell, problem goes away it's IE6 if not ....XP

Are you running SP2 on XP .. if not download it
Are you running anti-virus software if not go to http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ and download the free version of avg 7

G Man, I downloaded Firefox and after 10mins of surfing it stopped responding with the send/receive modem lights permanently on. Aaaaarrggghh!!

Can I download SP2 from Microsoft.com? I will also try the anti-virus site.

Thanks

Have you got the latest drivers for your modem/router

If not get the model type and make go to the manufactures web site and check

Would still recommend you try Adaware or Spybot. They sometimes find things SpySweeper misses.

Are your SpySweeper definitions up to date?

Hi, this is just an update

- downloaded Firefox but was still hanging while surfing
- checked the modem drivers and mine were the most current
- downloaded AVG 7 and found some Trojan viruses. These were duely quarantined.
- applied SP2, as soon as this was applied the machine stayed on line for over an hour with no problems

Now running Firefox and everything is running sweet. Thanks for the advice.
