Stumped - boot issues? Help!
Discussion
Hi,
I was using an old Asus A7v133 with a 1.4Tbird in my machine for some years. Late last year I upgraded the box recently with some choice components and the old mobo/cpu/ram/hdd/gcard sat in the original box for a couple of months (I moved them out of the new box I bought some years ago into my old box where they sat for many years previously).
This morn I've tried to get it working again so that it can replace my mothers old PII 350 but it won't post, well it might but it won't show anything on the screen.
The CPU/cooler weren't taken off the board during the swap over so it can't be a dodgy cpu insertion, but I have tried:
* Different AGP card (typically I threw some out some PCI g'cards about 2hours ago).
* RAM I know to be good (even though I'm confident of 512mb already in)
* Taking everything off the board bar RAM, CPU/Cooler and g'card.
It seems to powers up fine, all the fans spin happily, the hdd's spin up if attached, the board appears to work fine but my monitor refuses to show anything (stays on standby).
I'm stuck, at the moment it is sitting without a battery in to reset the BIOS to see if that does anything at all (I'm doubtful) but it'll be another 10mins or so before I can test that.
Any ideas? Cheers

I had a few issues in the latest build. Everyone on here shouted "memory" and, even if it was good, I am sure my first problems were with compatability....
So every time I have a problem from now on I'm going to consider that - even if I know I've taken memory from something else that seems to work!

well it's not the PSU (just tried with a different one, same problem), it's not the BIOS as that has now been reset.
The RAM is good (I've tried with a 32MB stick from another machine I know worked).
The monitor is good as I built a machine with it yesterday and it was working fine.
The CPU/Cooler is sat correctly - it hasn't been removed since the last time it was used.
It's currently sitting with only the basics attached trying to get it to boot and that don't work.
Could the mobo be shorting out?

Fire it up outside the case on a non conductive base. Just cpu memory and gfx - no drives not even a floppy. If it doesn't have a sounder on the board make sure you connect a speaker so that you get any bios beep codes.
You can fire it up without mem and gfx and it should give memory error beep code. If you know BIOS manufacture you can look the codes up (award, pheonix etc)

hmm, that was my next plan Malman, indeed it's sitting on my desk like that now. Its not even giving me a post beep
Looks like either the mobo or chip is shagged then
No this model came without onboard anything - it was just the plain standard motherboard with comm ports.
Could be, although I'm fearing the mobo has actually gone rather than just the bios. Seems strange that will allow power but nothing else mind

No idea whether this is relevant to the problem, but just out of curiosity does the MB have on-board video?

Motherboard BIOS shot?
If you are not getting any 'beep codes' that is a good possibility...

Stefan...
I've had motherboards come up DOA right out of the box before. It does not take much to completely blank the flash mem of the BIOS. Unfortunately the only way to know is to replace the BIOS or ship it back to the manufacturer/dealer for more extensive testing...
...On some BIOS-dead boards, power will flow just fine.
Bad luck if it is...

ah, didn't realise that was the case with the BIOS, almost figured if the chip had gone the circuit was dead (makes more sense for the fan pins etc to have a seperate power lead I grant).
I think I've realised the problem when I thought about it last night, upon building my new pc, I put the old bits back into the old box, but used some incorrect spacers hence flexed the board quite badly. Wouldn't be too surprised if the board has been cracked
Crying shame really as the PC was decent enough and it was only the thirst for newer stuff that saw me build a new box
